Dave Getchell Authors FOF's First Musical Album!
by Maurice Ali, Journalist
Dave Getchell at work producing his celebrated, thought provoking music!
Singer/Song writer, Dave Getchell goes into the Fortress Of Freedom records as the first musical performer to produce an album under the corporate name (tentatively titled: A Slant On Life And Living By D Getchell, Canadian Visionary). He did this with an intensity to the task that gave us 11 songs in under four and a half hours. Dave's selections produced 8 tracks that he states he would endorse for an album right now! With that endorsement, we have a complete album even though further work on peripherals and video may take place.
Taking a break between songs.
The day started with me frantically trying to clean the typical bachelor's pad for the recording session. I did not make it in time for Dave's prompt arrival at 10.00AM - but the studio was in order and the session could begin. It took us about an hour to set up because I decided to use the new "super" computer, and had to set up the editing program for capture (Dave seemed to know more about this than me.....). We also had to check levels and placement of the microphones and such. More on this setup is in order.
A view of the studio, yes a studio, with all of it's paraphernalia - and more in the office!
Fortress Of Freedom is an organization devoted to free speech in all of its forms; song is just one. This organization also attempts to show, by demonstration, how this expression can be broadcast to the world at large. By allowing more people to enter the mass media, more divergent views on all topics will be immersed into the population, broadening the thinking and opinions of all and providing for the empowerment of freedom of speech/expression for the individuals involved.
In this case, we forgo all the problems of setting up Cubase with all its variables, by simply shooting the album through our DSRPD170 camcorder which is capable of CD quality recordings though its XLR couplings and multiple settings. Initial testing was promising so we went ahead with this type of recording. In essence, recording from the camera made Dave only concentrate on the performance; and if the performance was acceptable, it was a keeper. There was to be no retakes due to technical glitches.....and there were none.
Dave is also a song writer and penned all of the songs on this album.
So the production was a success, even though there will be some post production. Nevertheless, if we wanted, that album is ready to go as is. Thanks to the professionalism of Dave Getchell. The folks at the famous Phase One Studios here in Toronto told me that the mark of a professional was their ability to get the tracks done right the first time and such was the case with Dave Getchell. With a few exceptions, most of the songs were keepers the first time. This makes life easier for all involved.....Thank you Dave! More news about the release date for this work as it becomes available. Stay tuned..... |
