Anti-War Protest in Toronto

By Zahava Bell, Journalist

I am addicted to protests. I love the ambience and the freedom to walk the streets.
The comradery amongst Torontonians protesting on March 20th was contagious, though there were many different factions. What united them this time was their anti-Bush, anti-occupation sentiment.
The turnout was not that large compared to other cities, but we managed to stir things up here & there. There were a few good groups of drummers. I like the drum beat when I'm marching.
They marched us around the block, back to where we started at Nathan Phillip Sq. My companion wondered why we didn't stop in front of the American Consulate as is usually done at these marches.
There was a small group of U.S. supporters demonstrating off to one side before the march. A row of burly policemen stood in front of their small stage, shielding them from the anti-U.S. hecklers who stood yelling "Sucks" whenever they chanted, 'U.S.A., U.S.A.'. Three men with Israeli flags on their backs danced through the crowd with a drum, singing, 'Hava Negilah Hava'.
