Radiation levels have Canadians concerned.
Rick Miller
Concerns over radiation delivered to Canada and the US from several nuclear reactors damaged by the Japanese tsunami have many Canadians unsure as to what to do to protect themselves. Potassium Iodite, a compound that can protect the thyroid from dangerous radiation, has been difficult to find in Ontario. "We all (franchises) order from the same book" said one Shopper's Drug Mart employee. Independent pharmacies can't fill orders either. "There are pages of drugs in the book that we haven't been able to order for over a year" added an independent pharmacist.
After the recent deployment of radiation monitoring equipment to the West Coast by the US EPA and Health Canada, the Department of National Defense was tight lipped about the matter of domestic risk mitigation, "It's DFAIT (The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade) that's taking the lead". Further inquires to DFAIT were referred to Health Canada who were unable to respond by press time. |
