Anti-Gaddafi Protest in Toronto!

Kevin Adgey

Yonge Dundas Square was the focus of a large 800 person protest on this March 19 of 2011. I note the day as just before the protest word had come out that French jets had been the first to fire on Libinan targets loyal to Muammar Gaddafi. The crowd at the square was there to support the rebel factions fighting for independence and support for the U.N. endorsed mufti-national force going to Libya to stop Khadafi forces from embarking on senseless violence upon its citizens. Many were there also in support of independence in Bahrain and a possible Bahrainian support in post-Gaddafi Libya.

This whole situation started as rallies and protests for the ousting of the Khadafi regime a few weeks ago. The rallies become action as protestors now becoming rebel fighters fought to overtake key locations in Libya and gain independence for Libyans from Khadafi. Khadafi then used air strikes against the rebels and this sparked the idea of a "no fly zone" to stop this violence against the rebels and civilians also in the areas.

The protest and rally were organized by the Toronto Arab Solidarity Campaign. At the protest Bahrainian flags flew alongside Libyan flags and a few French flags also flew in support as they were one of the staunchest supporters of the "no fly zone." Homemade and professionally made placards were at the event. Young, old and people of all sorts were in attendance. Most were just there to support the cause but there were speakers at the south end who blared pro-independence slogans and chants to a welcoming crowd. Collections were also encouraged at the rally for humanitarian causes.

The protest lasted from about noon to three in the afternoon. Canadian involvement with the "no fly zone" was welcomed and cheered at the protest. Najis Momen an event organizer, thinks there should be more done in addition to the "no fly zone." Momen was one of the organizers who were also involved with previous protests such as the Egyptian protest of a few weeks ago.
