By Tyrone Taiwo
The International Association of Independent Journalists Inc. will be attending the 55th Session of the Commission for Social Development held at UN Headquarters in New York City on February 1-10 (2017). The focus on this session will be the ever important problem of poverty. Maurice Ali, President of IAIJ will be the representative to attend the event. In addition to attending IAJ has also applied to hold a side event called “Improving the Online Participation of the General Public at United Nations Events!”
A synopsis of the event is as follows:
Improving the Online Participation of the General Public at United Nations Events!
The International Association of Independent Journalists Inc. (IAIJ) wish to hold a workshop and show how general public awareness and participation at UN events like the 55th Session of the Commission for Social Development (CSocD55) can be increased online through an application on their smartphones by, for example, polling or a popular vote and other interactive activity. There have already been successful online initiatives at the UN but are usually web based and not dedicated interactive smartphone applications. The basic issues and solutions for this workshop came from an IAIJ report titled “The Issue of Permanent Ongoing Participation of the General Public at the United Nations.” The workshop will examine the software and hardware and bandwidth needed to provide the basics for general public participation through their smartphones at the United Nations. We will examine and discuss the actual smartphone application for this type of participation. There will be a “hands on” demonstration of a working Android application to show people how users would participate through their smartphones. There will also be a discussion on how the availability of interactive smartphone applications in the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store can increase awareness and participation at United Nations events. We will examine how push notifications to the smartphone’s lock screen and home screen can let the user know of events and happenings where this type of participation is included. Copies of the report on which the workshop is based will be available as well as other reading material. There will also be a discussion on the compatibility of such participation as it pertains to the United Nations Charter and mandate. The benefits of this system can work at the United Nations for Member States and Stakeholders (including the general public) furthering the efforts at events such as the 55th Session of the Commission for Social Development and other events of interest to all!
Registration and application for the side event have already been entered as of the time of this announcement. While registration to attend is almost a certainty, the side event is not and can be cancelled for many reasons most often do to time and space constraints at a big event such as this. We will update information regarding the side event when it becomes available which should be on December 16 (2016).
Confirmation of receipt of the application for the UN side event!
