Dan's Photo Shoot And The Future Of The Mass Media!

By Maurice Ali, Journalist

So what does Dan's photo shoot and the future of the mass media have to do with one another? Simply that to survive in the new era of digital mediums, we have to cross pollinate all areas of the media.

Record labels as we knew them are extinct. There is no way a record company can survive today by going to a studio and making back money on CD sales alone. CD sales are down and CDs may be on the way out as an audio medium. The industry is changing and small record labels have fewer outlets to sell and real recording studios either are supported by other enterprises to survive, are are gone.

Newspapers have folded or dramatically reduced their size to where community papers are almost the same size as our very own Fortress Newspaper. We can thank the digital age and the internet for that. Books are now a novelty item for coffee tables and small library to add that special atmosphere. Actually, books can still sell especially specialty items but again, the internet and digital access to information has had a drastic impact in this area also.

Television, once a rather exclusive domain, is now a 500 plus selection with watered down programming to fill the void. The internet is the next realm of television and big corporations are vying to occupy this media with p2p and other applications.

The digital revolution has brought audio engineering to the homes of man and broadcast quality video to the common man, yet it seems that the common man may yet be left out. In the record business it is harder to get air-play and even harder to get sales due to the shrinking retail market and access to retail. It is hard to get into popular download sites and the "take home pay" per download is disheartening. The bigger corporations feel the loss and the smaller ones are effectively out of business. All of this conspires to destroy small time producers and kill ambitions of performers and writers of all kinds.

At FOF I spent the last four years learning the various disciplines of the mass media in all it's forms. We really can do it all here and have reached professional levels in all areas. It was not always pretty, but we did do it. We are riding the last wave of a bygone era of media, and we now will enter the new age and possible opportunities in the media saturated world of the future.

Can we survive? Maybe; as we are poised and flexible as the larger corporations. Much relies on our ability to get funding and support in the vast business of media promotion. The clothing Dan is modeling is one possible attempt to help us stay alive. The rappers know this and it is true, clothing sales or endorsements can help - along with the other venues - to keep the entertainment industry alive in the world of illegal downloads and a society which no longer needs to buy permanent physical storage for entertainment media. It will be an interesting trip, either we will fold and present our experience in our two hour movie, or we will continue and act as that advocate to keeping the mass media open to the masses. Time will tell.....
