PM Ready to Call it Quits?
Brought to You by the Makers of Poo
By M. Andre Moore, Journalist
It's a sweaty Sunday afternoon when you decide to stab your fingers into the till and snatch handfuls of cash. After stuffing your pockets to the bulge, you wave goodbye to your boss and co-workers then strut to your SUV. For the next several weeks you live high on the hog, spreading your booty like a ghetto star from Bling Bling Boulevard. All your friends love you. But one cloudy Monday the sky falls. After taking almost half of that night's take you've left a trail of wanton decadence that would make Caligula blush. You've committed the cardinal sin of crime; you got caught. What do you think will happen to you?
When Auditor-General, Sheila Fraser, detonated the atomic bomb of Canadian scandals, no one imagined how toxic the fall-out was going to be. At ground zero, the Liberals are feeling the ill effects as the cancer spreads, eating a hole not just in their party but in the faith of a nation.
Last weekend, Ipsos-Reid conducted a poll for the Globe and Mail and found that only 35% of those asked supported the Liberals-a mighty fall from grace for a party that was cruising to victory in the next election. Now, in light of the scandal, going to the polls in early spring seems unlikely and dangerous, unless Martin has suicidal tendencies.
From the ivory towers to the gutters Canadians are feeling more than betrayed, they are feeling had. They want more than just an explanation, they want blood.
Central to this crap storm is former public works minister Alfonso Gagliano who was summarily spanked and given three weeks to pack and get his hide back home from his ambassador post in Denmark. His was the first head to roll. If Martin makes good on his threats there will be more to follow.
But who?
Will the RCMP, charged with digging a clear path through this muck, implement themselves? What about Jean Pelletier of VIA Rail and Canada Post's Andre Ouellet? Will they be shoved into the unemployment line for their gross transgressions against the Canadian public? Not likely.
Which brings us back to doe and the reason why an inquiry into this rotten display of democracy will produce little more than massive bandages and not the surgery required. Everyone involved in the sponsorship scandal is a criminal, plain and simple, and should be treated as one. If you or I scooped $100 million dollars from anyone-let alone an entire country-we would be in a world of trouble; not just fired from our jobs, not just sent to our rooms. So let's send these bastards to the pen where they can compete for the affections of their cellmates. It's the least they deserve.
